S.H.I.P. SUPERVISOR INFORMATION
Sample Instructions
Welcome to Self Help Interfaith Program (S.H.I.P) at Typical Member Church. Welcome and thank you for your help in this very important ministry.
S.H.I.P. is a program designed to help those who have the will and ability to become permanently self-sufficient. Here are some facts about the program and its guests:
•
S.H.I.P. is not a temporary emergency shelter.
•
We are a program of restoration for those ready to commit to our rules and to work a full time job.
•
Applicants with special needs are referred to other programs.
•
All guests are treated as capable, responsible and accountable individuals
•
All rules are fairly and equally enforced.
•
All guests are informed of the rules at least twice and have copies of their contracts and our church specific rules
As the Shift Supervisor you provide one of the most valuable services to our guests and to our church. We appreciate your dedication and your willingness to give of your time from your own family to help ours.
Here are some of the important points for you to know:
•
You are not a Rule Enforcer. While our guests are under a strict rule of discipline, you are not expected to take action or issue “strikes” to the guests. We ask you to advise the Coordinators only.
•
If you have an incident that requires immediate attention, there are emergency instructions for you to follow.
•
Other violations by the guests merely need to be noted in the Log for the Coordinator to follow up on.
•
We encourage you to read the overview of the SHIP Log regarding each guest so you will be better able to interact. The log is in the kitchen drawer marked "S.H.I.P Coordinator’s Book".
•
The log itself is off limits to the guests. Please add your own comments both positive and negative in the log.
•
If you have questions or concerns the Coordinators are available for you in person or by phone.
Your Responsibilities:
•
Be on duty from 7:00 PM to 7:00 am the next morning
•
You are invited to attend the dinner which will begin at 6:30 PM. Please let the Coordinator know if you will be dining with the guests and the meal providers.
•
Please be sure all guests sign in and out. All guests must sign in by 6:00 but can sign out again and be back by 10:00. They must sign out by 7:00 the following morning.
•
A list of chore assignments will be posted in the kitchen. You are responsible to see those chores are performed. If there are violations, give that information to the Coordinator.
•
If you have a guest who does not return by 10:00 please contact the SHIP Coordinator for instructions.
•
You are asked to provide support, fellowship, supervision, mediation if necessary and information to the Coordinator. You are not a rule enforcer.
What to bring with you:
Please bring your own pillow, sheets, blankets, personal toiletries, flashlight and cell phone if you have one. You will have a designated bunk for your night’s sleep.
Support for Your Role:
•
The SHIP Coordinator is available to you at all times. The Coordinator will be at the facility every night at 6:15 to be sure the meal is on time, discuss any concerns you have about your duties and to be with the guests for any follow up necessary to any issues. The coordinator will leave only after you are oriented and comfortable.
